Contacting Your Guide & Frequently Asked Questions for Veterinary Medicine Site

Like all the Guides at About.com, I'm a real person. You can email me at vetmedicine.guide@about.com with suggestions, comments or questions about this site.

Please note that no one, not even a veterinarian, can diagnose or prescribe treatment over the Internet. If your pet is ill or injured, please call your veterinarian as soon as possible. Please note: even if it is a holiday, after hours, or on a weekend, your veterinarian will most likely have an answering service or recorded instructions on who to contact in the event of a pet-related question or emergency. Simply call the regular office number to get the details.

The goal of this site is to educate viewers about different diseases and situations that warrant a trip to the vet as well as interesting pet facts, news and veterinary knowledge quizzes. This site also offers career information for veterinarians, technicians, and those hoping to be admitted to veterinary school.

F.A.Q.

  1. Q. Can you diagnose my pet or provide a second opinion?
    A. No. I cannot provide a diagnosis or second opinion from this site. Accurate diagnosis and treatment require the following: a complete physical examination, thorough history, and completion of appropriate tests and procedures.
  2. Q. But my pet is sick -- I need answers!
    A. The first thing to do anytime your animal is sick, injured, or just "not quite right" is to call your vet. A proper veterinary exam is always preferable to any advice found on a web page, via email, or forum post. There isn't any substitute for a hands-on exam and consultation.

For a community-based question and answer forum dealing with all types of pet health questions, please visit the Veterinary Medicine Forum.

  3. Q. I don't have any money to see a veterinarian!
    A. Please see this article for tips and advice on how to deal with financial help and veterinary assistance.
  4. Q. I want to be a vet! Where do I start?
    A. You are invited to stop by the Pre-Vet/Career Forum -- the place to ask about schooling, career changes, veterinary technology, and how to prepare for vet school admission.
